Nepali fathers’ Day, also known as Kushe Aushi is a festival celebrated by Hindu Nepalese people. This festival is totally unrelated to the English Fathers’ day, however, the major objectives of giving fathers’ an honor remains the same.
It is also called ‘Gokarna Aushi’ or “Buwa ko mukh herne din” which translates as, “day to look fathers’ face”. Nepalese from all around the globe find this festival as rejoicing one. They visit their fathers’ on this day no matter where they live. At least, a video call as per the name’s motive is accomplished by most of them.
How is Fathers’ Day Celebrated?
The first thing one does in this day is waking up early and taking a bath. Some communities even have a culture of not eating anything before worshipping their father on this day. People usually go to the temple to kickstart their day.
They, prepare a collection of fruits and sweets in a plate along with essence sticks. They often prepare vermilion paste or ‘tika’ and a set of flowers for the ceremony. The next thing they do is worship their father and give them gifts.
People, who have already lost their father often perform a ritual as their remembrance. They perform, ‘Sraddha’ which is only done after a person dies. People often visit Gokarna temple located on Kathmandu on this occasion. A holy bath in the temple is also taken as the part of this ritual.
When is Fathers’ Day in Nepal?
The fathers’ day in Nepal is based on lunar calendar and can change every year. In the year 2019, “Buwa ko Mukh herne din” fell on Friday 13th Bhadra 2076 BS. Likewise, on the English calendar, it was on 30th August 2019.
